TAFT, California —— We got a good look at College of the Sequoias sophomore outfielder Rudy Vasquez last week during a road game against Taft College. Above, you can watch our video taken of Vasquez’s at-bats taken during the game against Taft.
The outfielder is hitting .328 through his first 20 games with the Giants, and he’s doing it with good bat speed, a notable patience at the plate, and an aggressive style that manifests itself with good speed in the outfield and on the bases. Rudy Vasquez is an aggressive hitter in the zone, and he doesn’t get cheated on swings, and yet he’s patient enough to wait on what he wants. That’s obviously the sign of a mature hitter despite the fact that he’s just a freshman at COS right now. A former high school player of the year in his district, there are some interesting moving parts here that could make Vasquez a player to watch soon.
It’s relatively tough to project any player based off just one or two viewings, of course, but Rudy Vasquez presents an interesting case: he’s very clearly a good athlete, he has the speed to play at a higher level, and with his bat speed and ability to spray the ball all across the field, he might have a significant future in the game beyond just the College of the Sequoias. For now, though, he’ll help one of the best junior college programs in the state of California as they try to run their way through the Central Valley Conference.
