Ventura, California —— At the top of this post, watch the Baseball Census scouting video of Cuesta College sophomore right-handed pitching prospect Cody Luther, taken from his work during a 2017 start for the Cougars against Western State Conference opponent Ventura College Pirates at Ventura’s spacious ballpark.
Cody Luther scouting report notes
The first thing you’ll notice about Cody Luther is his size, and at 6’5″ and 210 lbs., that alone will get him a second glance from scouts and four-year schools just to see if he can leverage it into a decent show on the mound. Past his genetic gifts, though, the right-handed pitcher is more than holding his own this spring for the Cuesta College Cougars, and in doing so, he’s showing off some decent stuff and the foundation upon which an intriguing future right-handed pitcher will grow. Through 11 starts for the Cougars, entering Friday, Luther is 3-2 with a 3.39 ERA in 66.1 innings pitched. He has whiffed 56 hitters in that time frame, while allowing just 57 hits and walking only 25 batters. He’s allowed just one home run, too—all of which points to a sophomore more than ready to move on from Cuesta now and try his hand at a four-year school come September and beyond.
Luther is doing it all with really only two pitches of note: a high three-quarters fastball that has a little bit of boring arm-side run, but is otherwise mostly straight with plane thanks to his height, and a curve ball that shows good depth and great spin at times, but can also flatten out and turn into a spinner when Luther gets around the pitch rather than on top of it. That’s enough to work right here and right now—and as you’ll see below, while his fastball life isn’t excessive, it is late at the plate—but at the next level, Luther will need a third pitch to keep hitters, especially left-handers, honest.

Here’s a breakdown of an at-bat vs. Ventura College outfielder TJ Durfee; Luther gets away with a couple questionable strike calls to earn one of his two strikeouts in that game, but the angle gives you a great idea about Luther’s action and stuff, especially as it relates to arm-side run and break:
