Jordan Szolek scouting report notes

No one will confuse Jordan Szolek for a power hitter, but he’s improved quite a bit from his freshman year at Porterville College to become the ballplayer he is now at the end of his JuCo career. His bat-to-ball skills at the plate are good, and while his bat speed is below average, he handles the bat well and has a mature approach at the plate relative to his age and level. He’s an athletic kid—more on that in a minute—and he can use that to his advantage at the plate in a spark plug-type role at the bottom of a batting order.

Szolek earns his keep in the field, though, where he’s proficient across the infield with the athleticism and speed to play the outfield, as well. He gets great reads on the ball off the bat, and has soft hands and an average arm. His best fit is probably second base, or third base, but because he’s so high-energy and athletic in the field, his ideal role is that of a super-utility player who can get called on to play at a different place every day — a role he got to know very, very well during his time at Porterville College. He’s a social player, too, and has some intangibles and team leadership attributes that’d make him a good buy-low utility guy at the four-year level for a small school looking for roster flexibility.

Szolek’s next step is still to be determined, but he’s the ideal utility middle infielder that would make a roster at the Division III or NAIA level for the next two years. We’ll see where that ends up taking him, but for now, he’s just being a ‘dog’ out on the field and getting his nose dirty pretty much everywhere—just like your stereotypical utility infielder should be.
