Fernando Romero, RHP, Minnesota Twins

Prospect: Fernando Romero
Position: Right-Handed Pitcher
Organization: Minnesota Twins
Height/Weight: 6’0″, 215 lbs.
Bats/Throws: R/R
Age/DOB: 23 (December 24, 1994)
Acquired/Hometown: Int’l FA (2012); San Juan de la Maguana, DR
Date(s) Seen: March 20, 2018 (spring training)

Fastball 90-97 (91-94) … Slider 82-89 (83-86) … Changeup 86-88 … Times to plate with runner on first: 1.32, 1.33, 1.34, 1.34, 1.35, 1.37, 1.38, 1.38, 1.38.

Very heavy arm-side run and sink on fastball; tons of life. Pitch is overpowering at times; he’ll play with velocity well into upper 90s. Not just strong on sheer velocity, though; excessive late movement that is tough to track for hitters, particularly RHH down and in. Will toy with fastball; tons of movement at times, other times straight and really rears back for velo. Multiple looks … Very tight slider with great depth; wipeout pitch potential with some feel for command. Will change the size and shape of his slider, too; one noticeably harder and more like a cutter (87-89 velo band); other larger with bigger hump, more depth in lower velo band. Tight dot on the pitch; tight spinner; consistent late action … Changeup is firm; shows harder without much velo differential; some tunnel similar to fastball, but inconsistent. Definite third pitch compared to stronger top two offerings, but could work well in specialized look to LHH … Tommy John surgery in his history; mild shoulder impingement issue as well; durability and injury questions, and needs to show full-season consistency in 2018 … Fernando Romero has a big time arm with plenty of life coming out of a three-quarters look; lacks ideal height and build for starting rotation role, but thick through lower half with some natural physical strength and should profile well in rotation for the Minnesota Twins soon. High-profile prospect who should see big league time in 2018.
