Samuel Miranda Scouting Report — C, Boston Red Sox

Prospect: Samuel Miranda
Position: Catcher
Organization: Boston Red Sox
Height/Weight: 6’1″, 175 lbs.
Bats/Throws: L/R
Age/DOB: 20 (August 21, 1997)
Acquired/Hometown: Santa Rita, Venezuela (Amateur FA)
Date(s) Seen: 2018 Spring Training

Timed 4.24 and 4.26 up the line to first from LHH box (40 speed) … 1.98 pop to second (from knees; out); 2.01 pop time to second (standing; out).

Well balanced and patient at the plate; maybe patient to a fault at times; tracks the ball well all the way to the mitt and understands the strike zone well, though he will chase with two strikes. Average to slightly below-average bat speed and some length in swing, but hands fire off quick enough to turn on inside pitches on occasion even though orientation & approach is to middle/middle opposite … Very vocal catcher; loud leader, competitive with intensity and directs fielders/pitchers demonstrably from behind the plate. Well-respected by opponents in my looks; stands out on the field … Decent receiver with good size, big targets, fairly low sets; good thrower who wants to show it off. Blocking needs work; tendency to read late in the dirt and get down late; needs to deaden the ball more, too; few balls rolling away too far after first contact on block … Big kid who looks bigger and stronger than his 6’1″, 175 lb. list; certainly enough durability to stick behind the plate. Samuel Miranda is young and advanced, entering full-season ball for the first time in 2018; nice prospect find for the Boston Red Sox who could flourish over the next few years towards legit big league catching upside.
