Justin Toerner Scouting Report — OF, Cal State Northridge

Prospect: Justin Toerner
Position: Outfielder
Organization: Cal State Northridge
Height/Weight: 5’10”, 185 lbs.
Bats/Throws: L/L
Age/DOB: Senior (Four-Year)
Acquired/Hometown: Temecula, CA (Chaparral HS)

Timed 4.17 and 4.19 up the line to first from LHH box; 4.44, 4.46, and 4.48 on the turn at first base.

Notes — February 18-20
Decently strong kid with some size and durability that should transition well into the pro game. Decent foot speed; faster at top speed than he is quick with a first step, covers ground at top speed and shows good range in the outfield. Solid jumps and consistently good reads on the ball in the air; moves extremely well and goes all out to make plays; will run into walls, dive for balls, etc.; great defensive intensity, though perhaps a little reckless. Good competitor … Strong arm in from the outfield; average to flashing above-average now, could settle into solidly above-average in pro game; good velo with great carry and some accuracy … Home run pop in his bat; inconsistent and sneaky, but it’s there, with some real ability to do damage when he hits the ball in the air. Wide set stance with low set that could be zapping some of his natural, raw power and leverage, but strong hands and wrists with good bat speed and enough barrel control and manipulation to hit the ball in the air, particularly when he’s pitched on the inner half.

Justin Toerner put together a nice, long career at Cal State Northridge and it could be enough for an organization to reward him with a late-round MLB Draft selection in 2018. Good athlete with average to slightly above-average tools for the pro level; not really a prospect going forward, but a safe, solid choice to fill out a pro org’s rookie/short-season roster with maturity and consistency that could prolong his career and maybe eventually lead him to make some noise. Platoon outfield profile at ceiling; more likely up-and-down/organizational depth future, but advanced already and could move through low minors quickly if given the opportunity.
