Manuel Melendez Scouting Report — OF, Colorado Rockies

colorado rockies baseball prospects 1 manuel melendez scouting report
Prospect: Manuel Melendez
Position: Outfielder
Organization: Colorado Rockies
Height/Weight: 5’11, 165 lbs.
Bats/Throws: L/L
Age/DOB: 21 (January 10, 1997)
Acquired/Hometown: Int’l FA; Barquisimeto, Venezuela

Notes — April 5-6
Opposite field approach at the plate; slap and run guy without much power or leverage through smaller, lean frame. Weak hands and wrists; going to struggle to drive the ball. Timed 4.09 and 4.12 out of the LHH box; 3.88 on a base hit bunt attempt … Some bat speed and decently quick hands to turn on pitches on the inner half, though; good overall plate coverage already with some semblance of an approach up there. Will bunt for a base hit; bunting and the threat of it are regular parts of his game … Not a great arm in the outfield. Weaker throws without much velo and lacking carry; played right field in my look, and to be fair, was out of position; appears to be a more natural center fielder with some foot speed to cover ground … Speedy runner on the base paths; good first step quickness out of the box and down the line. Struggled to use speed quite as effectively on defense in my look, but again, was playing out of position and in first few games in windy Lancaster when I saw him. Bears following to get a better, more full read on defensive tools … Manuel Melendez doesn’t have enough offensive tools to be an everyday outfielder at ceiling in all likelihood; probably ticketed for bench role with a shot to be a fast, defense-first outfield option on a roster one day. May eventually fall into some kind of platoon, or may well fall back to organizational depth for the Colorado Rockies; speedy, which helps, but not a ton of other projectable tools here upon which to build.
