Johnny Davis Scouting Report — OF, Milwaukee Brewers

Prospect: Johnny Davis
Position: Outfielder
Organization: Milwaukee Brewers
Height/Weight: 5’10”, 180 lbs.
Bats/Throws: S/R
Age/DOB: 27 (April 26, 1990)
Acquired/Hometown: 22nd Round (2013); Compton, CA (West Los Angeles College)

Timed 3.84 and 3.86 up the line from the LHH box.

Notes — April 10-12
Limited offensively; very new to the game and extremely raw, and you can tell, particularly at the plate. Switch hitter, but I only saw him hit left-handed; complete slap-and-run approach. Chokes up on the bat and looks to go opposite field on the ground and beat it out with elite foot speed to first base; very little ability or desire to hit the ball hard in the air, or pull the ball with authority. Fastest runner I’ve timed to first base, though. Actually shows decent barrel/contact skills for the level considering he’s such a newcomer to baseball; can’t steal first base, though, and needs to prove he can make enough hard contact and get on base enough to warrant his speed being useful enough for a roster spot as he develops. Sound defensively and covers a ton of ground; ideal center fielder there with great speed and good enough arm.

Likely bench role at ceiling, could provide value in a very specialized usage; speed makes Johnny Davis an ideal pinch runner/defensive replacement guy on a good team to be used only as a late-inning spark plug. Offensive struggles will likely limit his ultimate value/usage in the big leagues barring significant development soon. All that said, his story is pretty remarkable and deserves credit for getting this far; if the Milwaukee Brewers ever get some big league value out of Johnny Davis, it’ll be all the more noteworthy and impressive .
