Mitch McKown Scouting Report — RHP, Toronto Blue Jays

Prospect: Mitch McKown
Position: Right-Handed Pitcher
Organization: Toronto Blue Jays
Height/Weight: 6’4”, 195 lbs.
Bats/Throws: R/R
Age/DOB: 21 (May 21, 1996)
Acquired/Hometown: 21st Round (2016); Orlando, FL (Seminole State JC)

Fastball 91-95 … Curveball 73-76 … Changeup 84-86.

Notes — March 26
Big, physical kid; high three-quarters release point with some natural downhill plane on the ball. Pitches are relatively flat other than that … Fastball gives a decent power look up to 95, but it’s generally on one plane, often with some tight arm-side run but little sink beyond some modest downhill plane from high release. Got squared up fairly consistently in my look. Wants to go to the pitch; needs a little life and/or a few more mph to really make it workable … Can’t consistently command his curveball, but it’s a decent 12-to-6 look from over the top with some depth. Inconsistent execution and command of the pitch, but he’ll flash a good one every now and then; spoke to Jays official who privately lamented how little he goes to curveball; needs to improve consistency and use it more … Firm changeup in the mid-80s; some arm-side life to it, occasionally late, but not a ton of tumble or depth that’ll get off a barrel. Less demonstrated feel for the changeup right now; definitely a third pitch behind fastball/curveball combo.

Big kid who could add some velo over the next couple years towards a middle relief ceiling, but command issues and general lack of pitch life have prevented Mitch McKown from being the wipeout reliever the Toronto Blue Jays were probably hoping for considering his frame. Just 21 years old, still times to figure something out and middle relief role is still within reach, but needs to take a big step forward with command, pitch life, and how he uses his breaking ball to really turn a corner.
