colorado rockies baseball prospects 1 vince fernandez scouting report
Prospect: Vince Fernandez
Position: Outfielder
Organization: Colorado Rockies
Height/Weight: 6’3”, 210 lbs.
Bats/Throws: L/R
Age/DOB: 22 (July 25, 1995)
Acquired/Hometown: 10th Round (2016); UC Riverside

June 9, 2018 — Lancaster JetHawks (High-A, California League)
Struggled with sharp LHP curveball early from well-regarded San Diego Padres prospect Adrian Morejon … Got pull happy and took himself out of his approach to work pull side without full plate coverage; stopped trying to go to all fields, particularly when he got down in the count, and lost ability to stay true to outer half against a tough lefty; pulled off; possible tendency? … Executed pretty easy but on-target throw from left field on target to home plate to gun down runner by a few steps; throw was from shallow left, so didn’t say a ton about arm strength, but good to see he executed it flawlessly, threw a perfect strike to his target at the plate, and didn’t try to do too much; arm will definitely play in left, should be fine in right at least for platoon/backup stints as a 4th/5th outfielder, if not a slightly larger role.

April 5-6, 2018 — Lancaster JetHawks (High0-A, California League)
Some feel for the barrel with good bat speed and an upper cut swing path; will hit the ball in the air with authority, particularly to pull side, and should have a lot of fun in Lancaster. Struggles with pitch recognition and picking up spin, leading to late decisions; nevertheless, comes to the plate with an approach and should be a relatively advanced hitter as a college product who will make for a tough at-bat at High-A. Aggressive at the plate and will be exploited for it at higher levels, but barrel skills help him react some when he does get off balance … Beautiful runner; long strides; not the quickest first step out of the box, but he can run very well when he gets up to top speed. Ideal stride/speed profile for a strong corner outfield defender; good overall athlete with some promise at the plate that could carry him forward. Pretty good runner; timed 4.09, 4.11, 4.11 up the line from the LHH box; 4.38 and 4.41 on the turn at first base (LHH); 8.00 home to second (LHH) … Ought to settle into corner outfield role with age, and ceiling here is probably as a bench/platoon bat with some pop who can play both right and left, and match up as necessary. Maybe enough by way of tools to sneak into an everyday starter conversation, but over-aggressiveness at the plate will probably be exploited too much at higher levels to stick there. Nevertheless, Vince Fernandez could develop into a nice depth option for the Colorado Rockies in the next couple years and his power profile should fit well at Coors Field.
