Brandon Bohning, 2B, Cal State Northridge

4.24 up the line from the RHH box; 4.59 on the turn at first base; 7.97 home to second base.

Undersized guy; list height is generous; will fight underdog/undersized concerns his entire career without much physical upside. Modest strength but little power through smaller frame; decent overall athlete though, aided by average foot speed and good first-step defensive quickness … Not much to see in hit tool; contact guy with a (little bit) of sneaky pop, holds his own well enough with feel for all fields as a line drive guy. Plate discipline will need to improve as he grows; fair amount of strikeouts with some free swinger tendencies; will improve markedly when he works deeper counts and draws more walks as a table setter, but barrel control is advanced relative to age and he’s produced pretty well at the plate considering … Defensively, moves very well at second base with good first-step reactions off the bat and some feel for lateral movement to the ball, particularly up the middle to his backhand side. Arm is probably a 40/45 at this point with good enough strength, quick release, and strong accuracy to target. Not a flashy or showy defender, but consistent and calm in his work; fundamentals are there with good hands … Brandon Bohning has quickly become a nice true freshman find for Cal State Northridge; the fundamentals and foundation are there for him to be a long-term impact player as he ages into college ball; skeptical he’ll get a serious pro look down the road on account of his small stature, but if he produces for four years at CSUN, it may be tough to turn him away.
