Cal Hodgins, 1B, Oxnard College

April 23 — Big, physically imposing kid; room to tighten up and burn off a little baby fat through his frame as he ages into his body, but good size to work with here; ideal for a middle-of-the-order, corner infield type, as he’s been used at Oxnard College. Will tighten/strengthen up as he grows over the next two years at his four-year stop … Makes for a big, consistent target at first base and works fine at the position; likely limited to first based on my look — below-average arm strength and not a ton of foot speed or lateral quickness to play elsewhere, but he’s good for first base with some feel moving around the bag. Hands could improve some, but again, he does his job considering the position — catches everything, stops ground balls, good feeds, makes it work without being flashy or spectacular … Pleasantly impressed with his approach at the plate. Tall hitter with some raw power, and surprisingly good bat speed through the hitting zone; thought he’d be a scarecrow at the plate, but there’s some athleticism through his swing and definite bat speed to produce a little bit of pop when he finds the barrel. Didn’t see him enough this spring to really watch how the ball comes off his bat, but size and bat speed are going to produce some power for him regardless … Unlikely pro follow without enough athleticism and strength overall, but Cal Hodgins should make for a solid addition at a four-year school looking for some pop thanks to a solid track record the last two years at Oxnard College.
