Jaren Shelby Scouting Report — OF, State College of Florida

Prospect: Jaren Shelby
Position: Outfielder
Organization: State College of Florida
Height/Weight: 5’11”, 190 lbs.
Bats/Throws: R/R
Age/DOB: Sophomore (Two-Year)
Acquired/Hometown: Lexington, KY (Tates Creek HS)

March 26 — Committed to the University of Kentucky in 2019 if he doesn’t sign in this June’s MLB Draft … Athletic kid, great natural strength; well-defined, powerful musculature. Closer to final physical form without a ton of room to add muscle, but already plenty strong with quick-twitch actions; powerful with ability to create leverage at the plate … Big swinger, sometimes big misser; doesn’t get cheated out of hacks. Above average bat speed with plane to lift the ball in the air with authority, but suspect plate discipline and pitch recognition in my looks; over-aggressive. Not as mature of an approach at the plate as you’d hope for; will press in key situations; tries to do too much. That said, plenty of room to grow into a hitter; physical tools are there; more at-bats and some maturity will push him; plenty of upside … Athletic on the bases and in the field; covers a lot of ground in the outfield, and the arm flashes above average … Timed 4.20 and 4.24 out of the RHH box in my late March look … Jaren Shelby is raw with a broadly less advanced/nuanced approach through multiple aspects of his game, but the physical tools and upside are there; definite MLB Draft follow out of the State College of Florida in 2018.
