Luis Barrera, OF, Oakland Athletics

Longer, lean frame; decent overall athlete; runs well particularly in the outfield. Foot speed on the bases is OK; timed 4.18 and 4.19 up the line from the LHH box; 4.55 on the turn at first base … Arm is fine for a corner outfield role; probably fits better in left than right without truly above-average arm strength, but he can likely hold his own in either corner depending on the role; some upside through foot speed, perhaps a modest chance to be an above-average defender if things work out … Story in my April look was his time at the plate; struggled mightily to get off an ‘A’ swing in several at-bats; late, late, late to the baseball with emergency and defensive hacks even at times when he was ahead in the count. Swings looked defensive and poor even sitting on fastballs in fastball counts; wonder if he’s not seeing the ball right? Regardless, Luis Barrera was being overpowered at points by average fastballs and non-prospect arms; didn’t come across that well in my first Cal League snapshot; bears watching closely in the next few weeks when I get Stockton again down in Rancho Cucamonga.
