May 7, 2018 — Azusa Pacific University (NCAA Division II, PacWest Conference)
Tall, long, and lanky; projectable body with room to grow, particularly through lower half and core. Great downhill plane thanks to height; power pitcher with great raw arm strength and the feel to spin a couple breaking balls up there. Three-quarters (or slightly higher) release point; very short arm action in the back that hides the ball well from hitters on both sides of the plate. Fastball jumps on guys; sat 91-96 in my look, and he showed some ability to put a little on/take a little off as needed, but most typically fit between 92-94; paired it with a 76-79 curve, an 81-84 slider, a 79-81 changeup, and an 86-88 cutter (infrequent) … 1.25 – 1.34 to the plate with runner on first base … Decent arm-side life to fastball at times to go along with good plane; power pitch. Didn’t use it much in my May look, though; went off-speed early and heavy throughout game, pitching off his slider and curveball far more than the fastball … High follow for the 2018 MLB Draft; very likely to remain a rotation arm, at least for the time being, on into pro ball; projectable, lanky righty with room to grow into himself; mid- or back-end rotation upside at ceiling here, though that’s still a ways away.
