May 7, 2018 — Point Loma Nazarene (NCAA Division II, PacWest Conference)
Physically undersized but really competes; draws Cliff Lee comparisons from Point Loma Nazarene staff for his ability to spin it with some max effort in his delivery and a lot of bulldog mentality on the mound … Deep repertoire; fastball sat 86-91 (86-89) in my May look, pairing it with a 74-77 curveball (go-to pitch), 79-82 slider (tight; sharp with some depth), and a 77-79 change (fades) … Had him working 1.57 – 1.65 to the plate with runner on first … Pretty decent life across the board with full repertoire, but his go-to combo was fastball/curveball in my look, and he can really spin it. Some natural cut to his fastball; glove-side movement there with a decent bit of downhill plane despite short stature thanks to high three-quarters/nearly over-the-top arm angle and command to pound the bottom of the zone. Works downhill well with it and fastball velo can sneak up on guys; will elevate to change eye level, too, and can play with that some thanks to bigger 11-to-5 (occasionally 12-to-6) curveball … Max effort guy; very high energy on the mound with a lot of effort through his delivery, but he’s a good enough athlete that he repeats decently well even deep into games; control is ahead of command right now, and command profile will need to improve in pro ball a few years from now, but Garrett Irvin is right on track for now considering he’s just a freshman. Should prove to be a steal for Point Loma Nazarene the next couple years; definite Division I-quality arm pitching in the PacWest; very likely you’ll see Garrett Irvin anchor the Sea Lions’ rotation for another few years and get a long, serious MLB Draft look in 2020 and/or 2021. Worth checking in on him once or twice a year the next couple spring seasons.
