Greg Steinbeck, RHP, Cal State Monterey Bay

Sinker/slider pitcher with decent life through his repertoire, though lacking in power stuff to really miss bats right now. Sat 85-87 with his four-seam fastball in my May look, pairing it with an 82-85 two-seam (sinking) fastball, a 72-75 changeup, and a 70-75 slider. Timed 1.26 - 1.37 to the plate with runners on first base; worked from the stretch the entire time in this outing. Slider is considerably bigger with some hump; could arguably call it a curve at low-70s velo, but too much tilt and horizontal break for me to really call it a true curveball … Reminds me some of a less-developed version of Casey Costello; sinker/slider guy with a three-quarters release point who, with a bit more velo, could really be a ground ball machine against college hitters with enough pitchability to do it at the next level. He’s a couple years away from that right now, though. Greg Steinbeck is a Tommy John surgery survivor already who’s had a long road to get to Cal State Monterey Bay and his sophomore season; he has decent enough stuff to play a larger role with the Otters next spring and could even sneak into a senior sign conversation two years from now if things really fall into place. Low leverage/long relief work most likely if he reaches pro ball.
