May 9-10, 2018 — Chico State University (CCAA Baseball Tournament)
Strong kid, sturdy frame; decent downward plane from height, pitch life plays up out of three-quarters arm slot with sinker/slider feel; ground ball machine when he commands down in the zone. Big arm for Chico State University the past couple years; high-pitchability guy with feel for entire repertoire; consistent and polished without huge physical upside or projection … Sat 85-91 with the fastball in my May look; touched 92 twice early, sitting upper 80s, and then fell back a bit to 85-88 by the fifth inning of the outing. Paired that lively, sinking fastball with a 76-81 changeup, a 73-77 curve, and a 77-81 slider. Timed him 1.17 – 1.24 to the plate with runners on first base, as well … Lots of arm-side fastball life; sink and run, will produce a lot of ground balls when right. Pairs it well with a sharp, late-moving slider that has good tilt and breaks late to hitters. Went to the slider quite a bit as go-to off-speed pitch in my look, but he has enough feel for the curve to throw that for a strike when needed, too; will throw slider and curveball back to back and mix them up with fastballs to keep hitters off balance. Nothing is above-average, but he’s got real feel for four pitches, and Casey Costello has proven himself a winner with some real feel for the strike zone and pitching to hitters. Good senior-sign option late in the MLB Draft this June. Long-term ceiling as a back-end rotation arm; more likely to fill middle relief/innings eater role out of the bullpen barring significant jump in velo or pitch life upon reaching pro ball.
