Cameron Leonard, RHP, UC San Diego

Impressive outing for a young guy at the CCAA Tournament in my look, even while pitching in a blowout; threw strikes and pushed the pace; filled up the zone and challenged hitters. Lean and lanky with long arms; great extension out front gives some extra pop to the fastball even without lighting up the radar gun. Short arm action through the back; hides the ball decently well up until release … Sat 86-90 (86-88) with the fastball in my May look; paired it with a 78-83 slider and a 74-78 change … Timed 1.38 – 1.41 to the plate with runners on first … Straight fastball without a ton of life down or to arm-side, but showed promising command of it side to side; slider has some tilt with good depth late; throws it hard and break is sharp enough to get off plane and miss some bats. Changeup needs work; will slow down body and arm to telegraph changeup; pushes it to the plate; undoubtedly a distant third pitch for him right now behind fastball/slider combo … Cameron Leonard won’t be MLB Draft eligible for another few years, but he’s worth a long-term follow and occasional check-in at UC San Diego once or twice a year until then; plenty of projection in his frame gives nice physical upside; further, plenty of room to grow into his repertoire that should give him a shot in 2020/2021.
