John Glenn Scouting Report — 1B, Cal Baptist

Prospect: John Glenn
Position: First Base
Organization: Cal Baptist
Height/Weight: 6’0”, 213 lbs.
Bats/Throws: L/L
Age/DOB: Sophomore (Four-Year)
Acquired/Hometown: Thousand Oaks, CA (Thousand Oaks HS)

May 17-18, 2018 — Cal Baptist (NCAA Division II, West Regional)
Big, physical kid; some room to drop baby fat and lean into his body, but plenty of natural strength with muscle to build. Decent athlete even with baby fat; timed him 4.29 up the line, 4.66 and 4.70 on the turn at first, and 8.60 to second (standing double), all from the LHH box … Decent look at first base; lighter on his feet than I expected considering his body type; not a great athlete, but average overall and certainly good enough to stick there, especially since the bat will likely carry him to pro ball. Hands are fine; moves well with good feel for the bag … Approach at the plate is going to need some work against better competition; shows orientation to his opposite-field side with ability to spray line drives there and up the middle; inside-out swing with little plate coverage on the inner half/inconsistent ability to drop the bat head and really pull a ball when pitched inside. Bat speed’s fine and hands are quick enough, but orientation is directed middle-oppo at the expense of his pull side; barring changes, better pitchers will execute hard on his inner half and really saw him off. If he’s to have a shot at pro ball, John Glenn must produce pop in the air to his pull side; more than enough raw power and physical strength to do it, but needs change in orientation/approach as he grows. Will be interesting to see his offensive growth & development at Cal Baptist the next two years as they transition to Division I and the WAC.
