May 22, 2018 — Inland Empire 66ers (High-A, California League)
Originally drafted by the New York Mets out of a Florida high school in 2014; traded to the Los Angles Angels after the 2016 season … Three-pitch prospect taking on his second stint in the Cal League after a poor (brief) first look late last year; looks marginally better with more consistent command and a better handle on breaking stuff compared to a year ago … Sat 89-94 with his fastball here; fairly straight with occasional arm-side run; decent downhill plane from a high three-quarters release. Will overthrow some; tendency to leave fastball up. Paired it with a 78-81 slider and a 75-77 curveball, neither of which are significant wipeout pitches; also flashed a changeup at 83-86, but that was his most inconsistent pitch … Curveball and slider bleed together — similar trajectories with near-identical break paths; not a ton of depth to his curve, similar tilt to both pitches; slider appears to be a relatively new wrinkle in his arsenal, and he may be best to go with that harder, sharper look and scrap the curve. Changeup needs work … Timed to the plate at 1.24 – 1.30 with runners on first base … High-effort guy with good arm speed through release and some recoil after landing on a stiff front leg; command suffers there with control ahead of it based on my look here. Long-term, Erik Manoah is likely a reliever who should add some giddyup to his fastball in short stints. Breaking stuff must improve to draw consistent weak contact and miss bats, though. Set-up man at ceiling; probably more realistic as org depth with a chance to reach long/middle relief one day for the Los Angeles Angels.
