Connor Grey Scouting Report — RHP, Arizona Diamondbacks

arizona diamondbacks baseball prospects news 1 connor grey scouting report
Prospect: Connor Grey
Position: Right-Handed Pitcher
Organization: Arizona Diamondbacks
Height/Weight: 6’0”, 180 lbs.
Bats/Throws: R/R
Age/DOB: 24 (May 6, 1994)
Acquired/Hometown: Round 20 (2016); Frewsburg, NY (St. Bonaventure)

May 23, 2018 — Visalia Rawhide (High-A, California League)
Tall and lean; physical strength left to build out, particularly through lower half. High three-quarters release; good downhill plane with stuff. Works from the first base side of the rubber. Good tempo on the mound; pushes the pace on hitters; strike thrower, forces the issue. Pace does slow considerably with runners on base, though … Fastball 88-90, Changeup 81-83, Curveball 72-74, Slider 81-84; times varied wide 1.39 – 1.51 with runner on first base … Modest arm-side life to fastball, but lacking velo or power look; commands it well side to side and went to it quite a bit in late May look. Slider is go-to off-speed pitch; tilt with decent 11-to-5 break to it; not a wipeout pitch, but can miss a few barrels and get guys modestly off-balance; drew a few awkward check swings, some guys having trouble picking up spin on it. Curveball is rare; only threw it to RHH, and even then, it only came out a couple times through six innings of shutout work. Tendency to miss up and out of the zone with the curveball; doesn’t always finish it well … Overall, Connor Grey lacks a top-flight repertoire even with some modest physical projection, and without wipeout stuff or above-average velocity, it’s most likely he settles into a lower leverage role, likely out of the bullpen. There’s some pitchability with a fairly deep repertoire here, though, and that puts his ceiling at an outside shot at earning swingman/back-end rotation starts for the Arizona Diamondbacks.
