May 22-24, 2018 — Visalia Rawhide (High-A, California League)
Very good athlete being tested early in career with big jump to High-A; ample foot speed and plenty of physical projection through long, lean frame, but bat and offensive approach must catch up to speed/defensive game to really actualize projection … Timed 4.19 up the line from the RHH box in Visalia in late May; better runner in the outfield, though, with great top speed once he really strides it out. Long strides, covers a ton of ground, and tracks the ball well in the air. Solid throws into bases from deep in gaps, too; arm is average to above-average right now with good velocity and carry and decent accuracy; good enough there and overall defensively to work as an everyday center fielder … Improvement to come at the plate; decent bat speed, but long swing with tendency to get wrapped at load; late to hard stuff on the inner half; lots of broken bats in my look; getting eaten up on the inner half of the plate right now by power velo without the tools to make an adjustment. Producing quite a bit of weak contact right now, too. To his credit, Marcus Wilson does draw a few walks already and shows a decent eye at the plate with some patience to work deep counts … The Arizona Diamondbacks have a nice outfield project here with an everyday ceiling if the bat can develop, though Marcus Wilson will fall back into a backup/up-and-down role if he fails to hit enough. That said, he’s coming off a strong 2017 at Low-A and may just need time to adjust further here in Visalia through the 2018 season.
