arizona diamondbacks baseball prospects news 1 wei-chieh huang scouting report

Bats/Throws: R/R
Age/DOB: 24 (September 26, 1993)

May 24, 2018 — Visalia Rawhide (High-A, California League)
High three-quarters/nearly overhand release point with good downward plane on stuff when he’s commanding down in the zone, even considering lack of size and height. Long arm action with long back swing and lots of moving parts through his delivery; struggled to get everything in sync and consistently find one release point. Trouble syncing up in my May look here; couldn’t consistently execute down in the zone, command below-average and very much affected by inconsistent mechanics and arm action … Decent arm strength with some power, but tendency to overthrow; fastball sat 91-93 in my look; curveball 73-75; changeup 81-83; timed 1.37 – 1.42 to the plate with runner on first base … fastball is OK when down in the zone, but generally straight and lacks true power look; pitch won’t overpower many hitters at higher levels. Curveball is a true 12-to-6 breaker, but without a ton of depth; break can play well changing eye level with fastball plane, but he lacks consistent command and execution here as with the rest of his repertoire; needs to show he can throw curve for a strike early before going to it as a wipeout look late. Changeup is a show-me … At 24 years old and without significant time or success in the upper minors, the window is fast closing for Wei-Chieh Huang; tough to envision him as more than organizational depth at this rate, though he has turned a corner in 2018, and perhaps the Arizona Diamondbacks can squeeze some short-stint middle relief work out of him one day yet; that’s probably unlikely, but there’s the ceiling. Need to see him in Double-A before 2018 ends.
