Collin Theroux Scouting Report — C, Oakland Athletics

Prospect: Collin Theroux
Position: Catcher
Organization: Oakland Athletics
Height/Weight: 6’2”, 220 lbs.
Bats/Throws: R/R
Age/DOB: 24 (March 10, 1994)
Acquired/Hometown: Round 32 (2016); San Mateo, CA (San Joaquin Delta College; Oklahoma State)

April 25-26, 2018 — Stockton Ports (High-A, California League)
Big, strong kid, tall particularly for a catcher; wonder if there’s a transition coming soon to get him in a position that’s a better long-term physical fit. That said, he’s very active, very high-energy behind the dish, and he shows great situational awareness there. Flexible with low sets even considering his height; quiet framer, decent blocker. Natural field general who can be vocal when he needs to; seems to deal very well with pitching staff and directs traffic on the field well. Natural leader with great disposition, great makeup … pop time 1.92 to second base (runner safe); very strong arm more than makes up for some inefficiencies in mechanics there; perhaps a shot to be quicker with pop time but will be tough to cut down movement considering long, big frame … Far more of a project at the plate; struggles to pick up spin on breaking balls and shows pitch recognition issues. Susceptible to off-speed and will get over-aggressive, lunge out, get out of his approach. Above-average raw power when he does connect in the air; hit a towering homer with a very, very impressive swing in one of the at-bats we have on film below here; good bad speed, great separation, and strong wrists and hands; just hasn’t happened often enough thus far in pro ball … Collin Theroux is a very likable, smart ballplayer and his tools profile as an up-and-down or backup catcher (or utility-catcher type) one day at ceiling, but that won’t happen unless his bat improves quickly and considerably. I like him as a defensive catcher, even considering his larger frame, but it’s doubtful the Oakland Athletics see him as much more than org depth at this point.
