Imani Abdullah Scouting Report — RHP, Los Angeles Dodgers

Prospect: Imani Abdullah
Position: Right-Handed Pitcher
Organization: Los Angeles Dodgers
Height/Weight: 6’4”, 205 lbs.
Bats/Throws: R/R
Age/DOB: 21 (April 20, 1997)
Acquired/Hometown: Round 11 (2015); San Diego, CA (Madison HS)

May 2, 2018 — Rancho Cucamonga Quakes (High-A, California League)
Looked lost; completely lost control, dropping elbow and aiming the ball; major wildness issues, removed quickly in a particularly bad outing in my May 2 look. No command whatsoever; guiding the ball, slowing arm action in effort to regain control; far from free and easy at release … Fastball sat just 81-86 during the outing, mostly 82-84; paired it with a 67-69 curveball which he couldn’t throw for a strike, and a 77 changeup he threw once; also timed 1.33 – 1.38 to the plate with runners on first base … Tough to speculate, but maybe something mentally wrong right now with Imani Abdullah right now; looks like a potential case of the yips. The Los Angeles Dodgers placed him on the disabled list immediately after this outing; will follow up with more later if I see him again in Rancho Cucamonga this year. Shame to see this happen, and really hope for redemption; Imani Abdullah had been quite a promising young prospect for the Los Angeles Dodgers before experiencing this setback. Update, July 11, 2018: Imani Abdullah has retired. This May 2 game ended up being his last; no public word on what the cause of voluntary retirement actually was, but it wouldn’t surprise me if the yips were a/the root cause. Sad to see. Wish the best for him moving forward in life after baseball.
