Junior Garcia Scouting Report — LHP, Arizona Diamondbacks

arizona diamondbacks baseball prospects news 1 junior garcia scouting report
Prospect: Junior Garcia
Position: Left-Handed Pitcher
Organization: Arizona Diamondbacks
Height/Weight: 5’11”, 220 lbs.
Bats/Throws: L/L
Age/DOB: 22 (October 1, 1995)
Acquired/Hometown: Trade (Aug 2015, HOU); Jima Abajo, Dominican Republic

May 22-24, 2018 — Visalia Rawhide (High-A, California League)
Slightly thicker frame without much physical projection or natural athleticism; some work ahead to maintain frame as he ages. Three-quarters release with a little bit of arm-side life to his fastball, but mostly on plane without depth or fade down away from RHH. Fairly conventional mechanical look; sets on first base side to get angle on LHH, but lacks significant quirkiness/deception to really set himself apart as a situational lefty bullpen arm … Fastball sat 88-91 in May 23 look; paired it with an 81-83 slider and an 83-85 changeup. Timed 1.26 – 1.28 on slide step to the plate with runners on base; mid- to high-1.60s with slower balance point move to the plate … Slider proved to be a workable pitch for him in my look; some tilt there with depth and feel for throwing it to a couple different places within the strike zone; made for nice secondary opposite fastball and while it didn’t really look like it’d miss a lot of bats, it’s an OK second look to draw some off-balance contact when needed … Changeup is a show-me pitch without much use or current value based on his outing here; primarily a fastball/slider guy with occasional flat, firm changeups mixed in typically only to RHH. Lacks average/above-average, wipeout stuff … All told, Junior Garcia isn’t likely to be much more than organizational depth going forward for the Arizona Diamondbacks; maybe his handedness gets him a shot at highly-specialized situational relief at ceiling, but there are better, more projectable candidates for that throughout the organization.
