Connor Wong Scouting Report — C, Los Angeles Dodgers

Prospect: Connor Wong
Position: Catcher
Organization: Los Angeles Dodgers
Height/Weight: 6’1″, 181 lbs.
Bats/Throws: R/R
Age/DOB: 22 (May 19, 1996)
Acquired/Hometown: Round 3 (2017); Houston, TX (Houston)

May 2, 2018 — Rancho Cucamonga Quakes (High-A, California League)
Had him 4.30 up the line from the RHH box; 4.69 on the turn at first base, 8.43 home to second, and 11.83 home to third (sliding triple, safe) … Good plate coverage with some sneaky pop in his bat and above-average bat speed; spoke at length to a scout who believes Connor Wong has the opposite field side figured out and wants to see him more frequently pull the ball with authority to take advantage of some of that natural power.

April 25-26, 2018 — Rancho Cucamonga Quakes (High-A, California League)
Need to sit on him further to get a better read on his defensive work behind the plate, but Connor Wong isn’t afraid to throw to bases and shows decently quick releases with good accuracy; 1.56 pop time on a steal of third base (safe), and 1.71 back pick from his knees to first base in my look. Strong arm; quiet framer; consistent presence behind the plate. Very good athlete for a catcher, and has seen time at other positions; the Los Angeles Dodgers like flexible catchers, and he may fit the mold there with some ability to play in the field, too … Timed 4.32 up the line from the RHH box, and 4.73 on the turn at first base in my late April look … Some pop in his bat, but showed pitch recognition problems in at-bats here; trouble picking up spin and significant trouble staying off breaking balls in the dirt. Fastball hitter, and a high-ball hitter; struggles when pitched down in the zone and produces ground ball contact there, but really found the barrel and can mash some when he’s pitched further up; bat speed to turn around fastballs, even up … Takes a marked two-strike approach to cut down and make contact; battles well with two strikes, but at the expense of some of his pop; flashes inside out approach at times, particularly when he has two strikes; more than content to go the opposite way and take what’s given to him in those situations … Want to see him a good bit more to nail down a projection, but Connor Wong feels like a decent second-level catching prospect right now: likely platoon/backup role at ceiling, but moderately valuable for a flexible Los Angeles Dodgers roster if the power bat develops and he proves he can play a few positions, even in short stints.
