Zander Clarke, OF, UC San Diego

Big, physical kid with plenty of natural strength through entire frame; strong through core and lower half with leverage for power; strong upper body, too, with durability for everyday work in pro ball. At/near final form with age now, but physical specimen with good underlying athleticism and foot speed beyond just raw strength; had him 4.20 up the line from the RHH box in early May, and 6.94 scoring from second (secondary lead) off the bat on a single … Fits well as a corner outfielder, particularly right field; strong arm with good carry on throws and good accuracy; teams must know/account for running on him in right field. Should provide enough pop offensively to warrant an everyday role in a corner outfield spot … Bat — particularly power — is his carrying tool; huge raw power to all fields in BP with natural power alley to left-center field in game action, though he has more than enough strength to go oppo against good velo in game, too. Strong hands and wrists with plenty of leverage through swing and load to lift the ball in the air with authority; strong kid with pop coming as he grows into the game. Will strike out some and he’s susceptible to being over-aggressive, particularly with some spin/breaking ball recognition issues, but power bat is there and could flourish in coming years … Zander Clarke is no doubt on a few pref lists for the 2018 MLB Draft; whichever organization drafts him will have acquired a potential everyday corner outfielder at ceiling with an intriguing power bench bat/platoon role floor.
