Pedro Fernandez Scouting Report — RHP, Kansas City Royals

Prospect: Pedro Fernandez
Position: Right-Handed Pitcher
Organization: Kansas City Royals
Height/Weight: 6’0”, 175 lbs.
Bats/Throws: R/R
Age/DOB: 24 (May 25, 1994)
Acquired/Hometown: Int’l FA (2011); Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic

May 30, 2018 — Northwest Arkansas Naturals (Double-A, Texas League)
Three-quarters release with heavy fastball, fair amount of side-to-side pitch life there; lacks above-average stuff or velo but moderately difficult for hitters to square up with some natural run and life to everything he throws. Fastball sat 90-93 in late May look; very heavy pitch with boring action in on RHH; occasional sink, more pronounced when released on top and commanded down in the zone. Will break bats and really get in on RHH hands to draw weak contact away from the barrel … Paired fastball with a 78-80 change and a 77-81 slider, both of which are a bit further behind. Slider is a 10-to-4 spinner with more horizontal movement than vertical depth, but on occasion it can give a nice equal-and-opposite feel to the fastball; will get guys off balance with good arm action on the pitch, but lacked true wipeout feel based on my look … Timed 1.58 – 1.66 to the plate with runner on first base … Pitches to contact without above-average stuff, and so Pedro Fernandez has little more than a middle- to long-relief ceiling in low-leverage situations for the Kansas City Royals. He’s a ground ball machine with a hard, heavy fastball at best, but he’s also undersized and already at final physical form with little projection to push him forward and little margin of error with his repertoire. Because of that, it’s probably likely Pedro Fernandez will remain organizational depth for however long the rest of his career may last.
