Braden Bishop Scouting Report & Game Video
Dates Observed: June 1-3, 2018
Team/Organization: Arkansas Travelers (Seattle Mariners)
League/Level: Texas League (Double-A)
Scouting Notes: Mariners prospect Braden Bishop is very well known around these parts; whether for his off-the-field outreach, or the exceptional adjustments at the plate that resurrected his career, Bishop isn’t a stranger here. Seeing him in 2018, then, has meant seeing a quality outfield prospect take the next step forward in his development path. Bishop is stronger, faster, and more equipped with the bat this year than he’d been in previous seasons. He enjoyed a particularly good week at the plate during my look here; bat path is clean and now within his muscle memory, and even though the outfielder doesn’t have big-time raw power, he put on a bit of muscle and has an opportunity to hit a few home runs. He’s gotten a little bit faster on the bases, too; I timed Bishop at 4.11, 4.13, 4.15, 4.15, and 4.16 up the line from the RHH box at the beginning of June, along with a 4.44 turn at first base and an 8.12 home to second time on a standing double. Any way you slice it, along with his first step reads and quality jumps in the outfield, that’s big league speed. He’ll put it to good use soon enough, but it’s his bat — and his ability to make adjustments with the bat — that has really come along as Bishop’s career has developed. I’m higher on Braden Bishop than I’d been in the past; a year ago he was a 45 FV for me with defensive upside and an OK platoon/bench bat, but now I’m more inclined to see a path to the Mariners in an everyday capacity with a legit 50 FV thanks to another strong year of development.
