Alexander Guillen Scouting Report & Game Video
Dates Observed: June 9, 2018
Team/Organization: Lancaster JetHawks (Colorado Rockies)
League/Level: California League (High-A)
Scouting Notes: Overhand release nearly to the extreme; hides the ball OK, jumps on hitters fairly quickly, but struggles to work down; good plane when he’s at the knees, but tendency for arm to drag behind and stuff to flatten out/get left up in the zone. Strong arm, decent velo; sat 92-97 with the fastball in this look; paired it with an 85-87 slider and an 83-85 changeup … Fastball fairly straight, little by way of run or tail; not a ton of life from overhand release. At least partially mechanical, as discussed above, but really struggled to command fastball in this look; spiked a few, struggled to feel side to side at the plate, showed out more as a raw power guy over-throwing than a pitcher commanding the ball … Lacked changeup feel, tough to grade it as an off-speed here; slider is a power pitch, has OK tilt with some depth. Throws it hard with sharp movement late; not a ton of break there but enough to get off barrels, miss some bats, particularly against RHH … Alexander Guillen is working high-leverage innings in Lancaster this summer (his second year in the Cal League), but long-term he’s probably more of a middle reliever at ceiling. Some intrigue here with power arsenal in fastball-slider combo, but he’ll need a good deal more command consistency and reliability in changing speeds if he’s to hit that ceiling and out-pitch a likely up-and-down or org depth future.
