Though he may have been a late bloomer through high school, right-handed pitcher Tanner Bibee has put himself in a very good position entering his sophomore year this fall at Cal State Fullerton. The Mission Viejo native threw 56 innings for the Titans as a true freshman, finishing with a stellar 56:18 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 19 appearances (seven starts) for the nationally renowned Division I program. Then, Bibee earned a rotation gig for one of the best summer ball teams in the country, the California Collegiate League’s Santa Barbara Foresters, which is where he first landed on our radar earlier this month.
A drop-and-drive guy who hides the ball well and comes from a three-quarters look that allows for plenty of pitch life, Bibee sits 88-93 with his fastball. He’ll manipulate it some, too, appearing to occasionally flash an 87-88 cut version of the pitch to his glove-side in addition to the heavy arm-side runner he can bank against right-handed batters. Off-speed command is more of a work in progress, but his slider is sharp and late, with great tilt already, and sits 77-80; he’ll also show a workable 79-82 changeup that enters the mix primarily against lefties.
Very, very deliberate in his sets and holds with runners on base, it seems even as a youngster playing at a high level, the righty has been able to slow down the game and mentally manage it in competition. The foundation is there for a strong career at Cal State Fullerton, and if Tanner Bibee continues to develop his repertoire from here, we’ll soon be talking about him as a solid pro prospect, too. He’s not eligible for the MLB Draft until 2020, but when he gets there, it sure looks like he’ll have back-end rotation potential at ceiling. Without question, there’s a lot to like here.
