Art Warren Scouting Report

A late-round draft pick out of a small college in Ohio, the Seattle Mariners had Art Warren starting in the first few years of his minor league career before transferring him to the bullpen full-time ahead of 2017. That move may end up transitioning Warren’s career from one of organizational depth as a low-minors starter, to a potential middle relief option in the big leagues one day if he continues throwing the way he is out of the bullpen early in 2017. The righty sits between 90-95 mph out of the bullpen, with good life and some run on his fastball, and good command for the pitch in high-leverage situations.

Warren couples that with a slider that sits 83-84 mph, and a curveball that is 73-74 mph (topping out at 76 mph) and shows great spin, a good hump, and a good 11-to-5 break. That’s a tough pitch to perfect out of the pen, but if Warren can do it, that’s a huge card up his sleeve as not many middle- and late-relief options have true overhand curveballs to this degree. Above all, Warren’s bullpen role has his stuff playing up significantly, and a major smoothing-out of his mechanics further has him difficult to square up and intriguing for the future. He’s not a top prospect or a widely-regarded future big leaguer, but Art Warren may just be made for the Seattle Mariners’ bullpen—and he might just carve out a big league future from it.
