Braden Bishop Scouting Report

The Seattle Mariners’ third round draft pick in 2015 out of the University of Washington, Braden Bishop has always been an exceptional defender in center field, with plus speed and the ability to get great jumps and even better reads on balls off the bat out at the position with a decently strong arm to boot. His offense has come into question at times, and he’s a slight, thin guy who has lots of room to grow into his body, but Bishop’s defense alone could get him to the big leagues as a fourth outfielder-type who can cover lots of ground and patrol large expanses in the outfield. The more he helps out on offense in a role like that, then, the better.

Speaking of that offense, Bishop’s bat is starting to come around slowly thanks to a major adjustment he made in the position of his hands between 2016 and 2017. Far better than the first two seasons of his professional career with the Seattle Mariners, by 2017, Bishop got far more consistenly positioned to hit line drives in the air, and in turn, he’s improving his gap-to-gap power. That will only further come out thanks to his speed, knowing that even a moderate line drive stroke will turn him into a doubles and triples machine. He’ll never be a plus power hitter, even as he grows fully into his body, but there’s little doubt Braden Bishop has the potential to turn into a pretty productive offensive threat in addition to his plus defense if his swing changes in 2017 can hold. Soon enough, he’ll prove whether he can survive at the top of the Seattle Mariners’ big league batting order.
