DJ Peters Scouting Report

An impressive power hitter that routinely deposits tape measure shots in batting practice—and then again a few hours later during games—the Los Angeles Dodgers made DJ Peters their fourth round draft pick in 2016 out of a junior college in Nevada, and then tested him early with a promotion to High-A for 2017. He’s big and projectable, obviously, and he squares a lot of balls up, hitting it very, very hard when he’s able to find the barrel. Peters can get long and slow at the plate on occasion, and may never hit for average at higher levels because of it while always fighting to keep down strikeouts, but when he connects, he has the potential to be a StatCast darling with some pretty impressive exit velocities and trajectories. He’s patient at the plate and already has shown the ability to draw a walk, which will help him moving forward, and his speed on the bases is above-average even considering his size.

Defensively, DJ Peters has seen significant time in both right field and center field, and while he has the range and athleticism to play center over the course of a season, you can’t help but imagine he’d fit perfectly in right, especially considering his plus arm strength and accuracy throwing from the outfield. He’s a sight to see, though—a physical specimen who can run and hit for power, and those tools just don’t come around in perfect combination like this every day. Long term, Peters joins the ranks of other impressive prospects that have come through the Los Angeles Dodgers’ system, and figures to get his shot to see if he can turn projectability into something more by late 2018, or early 2019.
